Chinese Herb Medicine
Traditional Chinese herb medicine and herbal
remedies have been handed down from generation to generation
for thousands of years.
Different countries and cultures have different
policies with herbs. In the United States the policy is that
while herbs may be useful to support good health, it should be
kept in mind that they are not intended to diagnose, treat,
cure, mitigate or prevent any disease.
That being said, it is also true that in China
and in many other countries, millions of people use herbal
remedies as a part of everyday life. It has been that way for
centuries.
One well known Chinese herb medicine plant is
gingko biloba. This herbal supplement is made from the
leaves of the oldest known species of tree on earth. Five
thousand years ago, people in China were ingesting this plant
for its reputed health benefits.
In modern times, ginkgo is a very popular herb
that is in use all over the world as a supplement to improve
memory and blood flow among other things.
There are all kinds of natural herbs blends for
herbal cleansing, herbal weight loss and herbal skin care, etc.
There are herbs for ovulation, herbs for blood pressure, herbs
for the prostate, and herbs for menopause.
Today in many health food stores you can find
just about any kind of herbal remedy, such as an
herbal pain remedy and an
herbal acne remedy, herbal snoring remedy, herbal remedy
for dizzyness, and an herbal remedy for hair loss among many
others.
One of the most widely used Chinese herb
medicine ingredients is Panax ginseng. Ginseng is famous
as an anti-fatigue supplement. Panax is from the Greek word
panacea, which means "cure all." Ginseng is not really a cure,
but many people believe that it gives them a warm feeling of
refreshed energy when they are suffering from fatigue or
exhaustion. Others take it to get them through a challenging
day at work or school, while on a long drive, or for the
reputed boost to the physical love life and libido of both men
and women.
The reason for these widely noted effects could
be that ginseng contains over a dozen glycosides which are
thought to be somewhat similar to human hormones. These
glycosides may be what causes the often noted warm glow of
renewed vigor and vitality.
We like the ginseng that also includes royal
jelly from bees. Royal jelly is what is fed to the queen bee
and she lives about 12 times longer than the other bees. It
makes you think doesn't it? We don't make any health claims for
royal jelly but we just know that when we take it we feel
good.
It is interesting to note that the US exports
over $30 million dollars worth of ginseng roots to the rest of
the world. Ginseng farms are guarded like gold mines due to the
high value of these popular plants.
The dong quai herb is renowned for its
effect upon women's health issues. Known also as Chinese
angelica, dong quai is reported to ease menstrual cramps
associated with PMS. (Do not use this herb if you are pregnant
or trying to become pregnant.)
Precautions
Use all herbs with care.
While herbs have many beneficial uses, they can
also have a dangerous side if not used with proper care. That's
why it is always important to buy high quality natural
herbs that are made from standardized extracts.
Also be sure to read and follow label
directions when taking herbs. One reason ephedra is now banned
(after 5000 years of use) is because a few people were taking
way more per day than is healthy. They were risking an adverse
reaction in their quest to lose weight very fast. Only take the
recommended dosage of any kind of herb, supplement or
medicine.
Use common sense and follow label directions.
And as always, consult your health care professional before
taking any Chinese herb medicine supplements, especially if you
are on medication, are pregnant or nursing.
