Gotu Kola Herb Extract
Gotu Kola Extract.
Other known names for Gotu Kola are centella asiatica and Indian Pennywort.
Gotu Kola is extensively grown throughout the tropical climates around the world.
In the areas it grows it will sometimes be called a creeping weed and used to cover ground in
places like Java to slow the erosion of the soil. This ground covering plant is incredibly hardy and will grow in
difficult and unusual conditions like in gutters, drainage ditches and neglected areas.
Although it can be found growing wildly, it is a largely worked crop and grows beautifully under
organic farming circumstances. Gotu Kola’s leaf-like greens are used as a food source in places like Thailand, Sri
Lanka and Bangladesh. But its medicinal qualities have been highly recognizable since the late 1800’s.
Gotu Kola is widely used in Indian medicine. It can be seen used for all of the complaints of the
nerves and mind including memory loss, epilepsy and schizophrenia. Gotu Kola is also used as a nerve tonic.
In Chinese medicine, the Gotu Kola plant is prized as a plant that increases brain capacity and
longevity more than for any other purpose.
Modern science has an interest in Gotu Kola for its history of usage in treating brain capacity and
longevity. While doing their research, the scientists discovered that Gotu Kola is effective in treating fever and
inflammatory conditions.
For centuries, Gotu Kola has been used in the treatment of unattractive skin sicknesses like
leprosy, ulcers and syphlitic skin diseases. Indians also treasure Gotu Kola in the treatment of cholera,
dysentery, headaches, fever and stomach aches.
The most active element of Gotu Kola is something called asiaticoside, which acts as a saponin.
Asiaticoside displays a broad array of antibiotic activity from the herb. It has been determined to be in
fungicidal, bactericidal, insecticidal and syphlitic skin diseases.
The way saponins work is to weaken membranous tissues. When the cell walls become partly dissolved
the assorted microbes become easier to eliminate. Consequently, it is used with diseases like leprosy where
saponins, in this particular case, break down the waxlike coating of the leprosy bacillis so they are nonresistant
to the body’s immune system.
Asiaticoside is also assists in cell growth and accelerates wound healing by cell division. It is
therefore valuable in treating gastric and duodenal ulcers. The changeable oils in Gotu Kola make a diuretic and
blood purifying effect by creating a flushing effect in the kidneys. These oils also have certain steriods like
Beta-sitosterol that assist in lessening serum cholesterol levels.
Gotu Kola extracts have also been know to act as a spermicide to mice and could possible work the
same for humans. This possibility has not been researched or proven at this point.
Typical dosages are ¼ cup of the fresh leaf, 6 grams of the dried leaf and 6 grams of the dried
leaf extract, 30 ml of the alcohol extract and 30 ml of the water extract.
Gotu Kola is an outstanding extract to help you improve circulation not only to your brain but
throughout the entire body.
